Public housing was established to provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Public housing comes in all sizes and types, from scattered single family houses to high-rise apartments for elderly families. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) administers Federal aid to local housing agencies that manage the housing for low-income residents at rents they can afford.
Raleigh Housing Authority (RHA) provides two types of public housing: conventional public housing and incentive based public housing. RHA manages one conventional public housing waiting list and four separate incentive based public housing waiting lists. Each waiting list has a separate application, application process, and waiting list. Applicants are able to apply for as many or as few of RHA’s public housing waiting lists as desired.
(Note: Waitlists are currently closed to new applications. As of 5pm on October 31, 2023, all RHA Section 8 Voucher and Public Housing waiting lists are temporarily closed and are not accepting new applications. The best way to keep informed about our waiting lists is to check our website frequently. Sign up to receive email updates about our waitlist status here: http://bit.ly/RHA_waitlist)
