Housing Management Department

Section 8 Family Self-Sufficiency

Overview

As in the Public Housing Program, the Section 8 Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program seeks to reduce resident dependency on welfare assistance while promoting economic self-reliance and independence.  This program is open exclusively to residents who receive housing assistance with a government backed voucher administered through RHA.

Section 8 participants are particularly encouraged to:

  1. Further their educational goals and to have a minimum of high school diploma or GED
  2. Participate in specialized training programs according to their interest and goals
  3. Seek employment opportunities and participate in job training programs in efforts to increase their household income

Projected Phase Out

After evaluating the status of participants who comprise the current mandated slots, and the enrollment reservoir from which vacated mandated slots are replaced, we project that all mandated slots will be successfully phased out by 2006. Once all mandated slots are successfully graduated, remaining program participants will be allowed to continue under the existing program, in accordance with their contract, or opt to transfer into the KEYS program. (If transferred, the participant will forfeit any accumulated escrow under the former FSS program.)
